Painters-Hagiographers Cretan PaintersThe Byzantine hagiography, in combination with the Italian renaissance and the Cretan Art, created the relighting period for the orthodox hagiographic technique in Ionian Islands, especially in Corfu and Zakynthos. The painting renaissance of Crete started from the fall of Constantinople and continued till 1669, when the Turks possessed it. During the 16th –17th century, the Cretan School had remarkable representatives in the West such as Theotokopoulos and Ganfouranis. The Cretan painters were being influenced by the Venetian painting and Corfu developed as an artist center, as the Ionian Islands were the only center for liberal artistic activities; it is also noted that also a lot of Cretans came as refugees to the Ionian Islands, after the possession of Crete by the Turkish Empire. The painter Charalambos Pachis was educated in painting in Italy. The dance of Zalongo, The hanging of Gregory E’, the Evagelists on the marble temple of Saint Spyridon, and the well known Corfiot 1st of May, which is placed in the National Art Gallery, are remarkable pieces of his work.
