The first Governor of Greece, Conte Ioannis Kapodistrias

Born in Corfu in 1776. He was a descent of one of the most important noble families of Corfu. He studied medicine, philosophy and philology in Italy and returned to Corfu at the end of the 18th century, which at that time was seeing geopolitical changes: the overthrow of the Venetian occupation by the democratic French of Napoleon. His father, Antonios-Maria Conte Kapodistrias participated in the Russian government during the protection of Russia in the Ionian State. Ioannis Kapodistrias constructed the organization of the defense against Ali Pasha, who coveted Lefkas. During that period, Kapodistrias co-operated with the heroes of the Greek Revolution against the Turks. After the abolition of the Ionian State by the French, in 1808 the Russian Minister of the External Affaires invited him to Russia and in 1809 he participated in the Russian Ministry. In 1812, he handled the administration of the diplomatic section. The Tsar Alexander A’ admired his abilities and he promoted him to State Advisor. In 1816, Kapodistrias was promoted as secret Advisor (3rd rank of the Russian hierarchy). In 1819, he visited his father in Corfu and met and assisted financially the chieftains of the Greek Revolution. He also found out the violation of duty, -according to the convention of Paris,- of Commissar Maitland. In 1821 the Greek Revolution had started and Kapodistrias tried to pursue the Tsar to help his nation. He remained at the top of the Russian Ministry of External Affaires until 1822, when he resigned, as he could not tolerate being in that position without offering help that the Revolution commanded. He went to Geneva, where he hatched a plan of action for the assistance of the Revolution. On the 14th of April 1827, he was elected Governor of Greece, which lasted for 7 years. He traveled to many European capitals asking for help for the re-establishment of the Greek State. Kapodistias tried hard to organize Greece and had to contend with the disaffection of the chieftains and notables, who demanded more privileges. On the other hand, the governor believed in equal rights. He decided to make changes in the way of governing, which caused turmoil. The powerful family of Mavromichali provoked the people into a revolution against the Governor. Some of the notables and chieftains were arrested as per the orders of Kapodistrias. Petrobei Mavromichalis was one of them. His family considered it an insult and subsequently on the 27th of September 1831, his son and his brother murdered Kapodistrias, in the yard of Saint Spyridon in Nafplio. The Greek nation lost an eminent personality in the most important period of its re-establishment.

He offered his services for the re-establishment of the Greek State, as Kapodistrias needed his help for the organization of the education. Moustoksidis was elected Deputy, Senate and Lord of Education and he fought for the Union of the Ionian Islands with Greece. In 1841 left the policy and concentrated to the research of the history of the Ionian Islands. He published many pieces of his work in French, Italian and translated Herodotus in Italian.
